Hi Vince,
The flow of the arms is maintained by incoming energy flowing from other spectra (which comprise dark matter, even though they are not dark at all just invisible to our instruments)
Density waves are mid-twentieth century conjecture, but are wholly inaccurate.
The galaxy, as all energy does expresses a certain polarity relationship with other energy structures.
In this case we see that this galaxy is manifesting with an opposite
polarity to its surrounding space and so the flow is in the other direction.
It will not be the first galaxy to do so, nor the last.
An easy way to confirm this polarity function is really quite simple you in the northern hemisphere need only flush your toilet and watch which way the water flows out. Then ask Nick which way the water flows out in his toilet and you will have your 'proof' ;-)
Best wishes,
