The lessons.

You have a superb point, and one that's lost.

Life, it is true, is lived forward. And, it's understood backward.

When they were trashing LEO they knew they were doing it. It was easier, and the space looked so vast they thought they could never fill it up. Well, they knew they'd fill it, but new technologies, or whatever, could take care of it.

The areas we enjoy, Yosemite, Yellowstone, were regarded as wastelands for the most part, and those that weren't were salvaged by people we now regard as heroes.

They were heroes. And uncommon. Because they were farseeing enough to preserve some lands for the future.

When you contrast that with what folks want to do with ANWR, when you look at the last opportunity they had in space, LEO, you can understand the prevailing philosophies. None. Well, loot. And why we regard the earlier people as heroes.

Do you think if a ready, cheap source of high-grade crude oil were discovered in Antarctica that the US would keep it's hands off, treaty or no treaty?

And, it'll stay that way.
