Hi Mark,
X= solar energy input
P= planetary energy value
X is variable
P is variable
Here is what most scientists don't understand. P is a cumulative byproduct of X.
This means that from the moment this planet was formed its energy level has increased daily.
P does not lessen its value significantly over time, because P does not lose enough energy (in the form of heat) to space.
What P does do - is keep moving that energy around like a cyclotron.
Global warming is inevitable. To cool planetary temperatures you have to put all this energy to work in some other form. In essence you must absorb the energy from the atmosphere.
Reducing CO2 does little or nothing in this regard. Reducing CO2 will not reduce P - the ground will simply heat up and absorb this energy, polarizing regions into deserts and jungles.
CO2's presence is of little value to P. All this energy will be assimilated and converted. Plants are good because they help take this energy and pidgeonhole it into cellular structures.
The seas will become wild juggernauts, as this energy is passed through the waters. The air will sizzle (like it does here) and will transfer this energy to all the atoms in mass.
Like I say....the best way to envision global warming is as a planetary cyclotron.
To stop the process or slow it down requires one of two things...
1) Reduce the amount of X
2) Find a way to reduce P
To reduce X seems the most difficult. So scientists should be trying to figure how we can disperse some of the planets energy into space or siphon it to other worlds. Reducing P is the only viable answer.
In fact, I can think of a way already!
You should like it because it will involve going to Mars.
Set up two massive harmonically tuned coils. Put one on Mars and one on earth. Feed huge sums of electrical energy generated by creating an artificial huge ocean waterfall the size of Hawaii.*(think of how a boat in a tub sinks as it is pushed under the water - the water falls into it.)
In theory and practice two precisely tuned coils transfer electrical energy. My idea is to set up a global transformer - to shift electrical energy to Mars. This could power a colony easily once it was set up and worked.
Naturally the big question is how big do the coils need to be for their fields to be harmonically linked? Huge.
But there is another way. If the coils are really "identical" and made to oscillate at a very, very specific high, high frequency - the distance factor diminishes greatly. This is how Tesla could light a lightbulb a mile away from the his power generator without wires. I would imagine after enough testing on smaller scales - eventually the precise physics of interplanetary energy transfer coils could be worked out.
Space simply doesn't have enough atoms to absorb the energy. So the energy must be transferred to nearby bodies - the moon could work - but I would be afraid that eventually it cause it to explode, shatter or spiral into the earth.
Though it would be an ideal testing bed for the coils and the process.
That is how one could offset P and actually reduce it theoretically if the energy transfer is massive enough.
It would cost a hundred fortunes - but eventually it could save the planet from burning itself up.
That is a REAL solution to global warming. Not the bogus CO2 reduction stuff which wont cool a thing.
Technology will save the planet - so will big $$$$$$$$$$$.
Space travel is a necessity for extended human survival.

*By using the oceans energy you do not release the energy of fixed atomic structures such as burning coal or petroleum for your electrical energy. Nuclear, too is no good for this project because this energy is tapping the atoms static energy and not the planet's flowing energy. Ocean movements are caused by solar influx and are a natural way to shift this solar energy offworld. It may require hundreds of such coils to effectively transfer enough energy off our world to stop global warming. Though I believe it would indeed work as a "solar transformer".
