To discharge all this energy on mars efficiently (saving the cost of an impossibly huge storage facility) - I can see it now - hundreds, perhaps thousands of thin forty foot poles* spaced evenly apart, gridlike over the landscape and feeding from the transformer, all simultaneously discharging lightning bolts into the atmosphere day and night.

It's truly beautiful.
