Second half: handling a slander campaign

In a few days, an all source investigation into the failures of 9/11 will begin. Besides the failures in the formation of the threat estimate, including insufficient linguists, lack of human operatives, insufficient intelligence sharing, IT system failures, etc., there will be an examination of the handling of such warnings as were formed by Potus, SecSt, SecDef, NSAdv, DirNSA, DirCIA, DirFBI.

The cost of 9/11 was around 3,000 dead, $100,000,000,000. The next small impact will have a cost human and financial exceeding that many many times over. I can not with good conscious wait for the investigation into the failures which may occur afterward one of these things has hit.

From about 1986 on, I focused on Glushko's plans for a manned Moon launch in 1992 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution. That made me appear to be a "kook" to most people, EXCEPT those who actually knew about Glushko's plans for a manned Moon launch in 1992 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution. Thus I know the costs of being called a "kook". In the case fo the 1992 moonshot they were not that severe, and the best course of action was simply to smile. That is not the case here.

It is certainly easy to label me a "kook", particularly before the audience of manned Mars "enthusiasts" which gathers here. Try that before those who actually work in the field, those who participate in the Conference.

I am the kind of person who has always hoped for the best from people. For example, my hope was that by the time of the next set of Congressional hearings in 2003, Weiler and Morrison would step up to their responsibilites to the people of this country. Clearly, I was far too charitable in my estimate of their character.

I well remember the simple and direct way in which Rep Gordon pointed out to his colleagues that Morrison was useless. I wonder what Gordon's reaction will be when both he and his colleagues discover that Weiler and Morrison have been doing their very best to avoid having NASA take responisibility for dealing with this problem, and thus recklessly endangering their constituents? I am quite looking forward to it: mid 2003.

Now in the meantime, the important thing to remember here is that executive agency communications are not priviledged from the Congress below the level of Potus. In other words, both Morrison and Weiler's correpondence is open for examination by the Congress, by subpeona if necessary. While their existing correpsondence has already been preserved by system back-up, clearly, from this point on, everyone who deals with them will need to insist that any communication from them be put in writing, and then keep copies of that correspondence. This also particularly includes notes of meetings, as well as notes on telephone conversations.

How will Bartlett feel about the meddling with Goddard? And how Bartlett will feel about it if he learns that Maryland was submerged at least twice in the last 10,000 years by impact mega-tsunami?

As for me, two options are open. Since there are so many who are aware of the small impact hazard, one possiblity is simply to let them carry the ball, and go off and make money. While it is possible to attack one individual by slander, it will simply be impossible to slander everyone working on small impacts. In favor of this is that I don't handle these personal attacks too well, as I am usually completely occupied with other matters.

Another possibility is simply to go full bore on, and by taking the heat, provide others with cover. In other words, "Banzai, M*****r F*****r."

In closing, while my "kookiness" is very subjective, Morrison and Weiler's abysmally inadequate performance in dealing with this hazard is an entirely objective fact.
