Re: NSS, MS, PS, etc....

I've been a member of NS and PS on and off for decades. The best that can be said about what they have accomplished is treading water. They may have kept the space program from dying, but I tend to attribute that more to pork barrel politics than effective space advocacy. I joined the MS precisely because I felt the generalist approach of the PS and NSS wasn't working.

My own work experience shows the tremendous value of focus. The general goals of most MS members are the same as those of the PS and NSS. The main difference is a focus on what they consider to be the key first step. As Gary noted Earlier a return to the Moon can ride the coat tails od a Mars program, but not vica versa. Even manned missions to asteroids could benefit from such a coat tail effect. The key issues are where can we get a permanent foothold easiest, what is the public most interested in, and what can give the broadest boost to space technology. Most in the MS feel Mars fits all three.

Mark
