In the late 60's and 70's

Parents loved to take pictures of their back yard, garden, and fruit trees. There is a whole shoe box of these photos, with all different types of cloud formations in the background sky.

No contrails.

The contrails I see here start in the early morning and linger into the midday as they spread out and form cloud layers. If this was happening back in the 60's, there should be some of my parents pictures with contrails. The pictures were taken at all times of the day.

I have noticed the change over the last twenty years. The cloud formations are different to when I first came back to my parents place. I am a skywatcher and have been since a kid. Spent most of my youth during summer, bare foot and no t-shirt on my back. Like Huck Finn. In the last half decade I have seen sun-dogs ( rainbow around the sun ) where as before I never did see one here before. Year before last I am sure the sun burned higher in energy because I could feel it on my arms and back.

Jet engines are designed differently today, the chemical profile of aviation fuel has changed, and there is more pollution in the air. There are probably a number of other factors involved in creating these contrails. My observation of the trails being formed as the aircraft flys its course is fact. I am always outside doing yard and garden work and I like to identify the types of aircraft that pass overhead.

Some days when I know the barometric pressure has changed the commercial jets streak out sporadic trails like as if changing their altitude. Maybe they are passing through pockets of polluted air. Other days there is no contrail, period! You still see the jet making its course.
