Space/Science » in reply to Is Freon really hurting the ozone layer.

Kind of a moot point, now.

I don't want to get into the science of it, because basically, the horse has left the barn. Among other things, Freon is gone. Refrigeration is more expensive, and less reliable, as are fire extinguishers, and other items. The economic hit was survivable, but not small. Older people will remember when refrigerators were almost immortal. And people in the Third World could afford them.

If the ozone layer heals in the next few years, they will say it was because of the ban. If it doesn't, they'll say it just takes longer because the gases are "persistent." A no-lose situation. It will take many decades, and some solar variations, to finally determine the truth. If the hole disappears, or shrinks very small forever, the environmentalists will have made their point. If it stays the same, or cycles on and off in a stable pattern over many years, they'll have some 'splainin' to do. But of course, by the time the pattern is established, most of them will be dead. So it goes.

Wonder what would happen if someone sued Greenpeace or some other outfit for economic losses when one of the laws they promoted turned out to be based on a false idea. God knows a corporation would be held liable for such damages.
