Re: P.S.

I'd love to see the source of this 300 percent number.

Couldn't find that particular source but I'm working on it. In the mean time try this:

http://www.townhall.com/columnists/michellemalkin/mm2000111.shtml

"...over the past three years, the Republican-controlled Congress has approved discretionary spending that topped President Clinton's requests by more than $30 billion. " (Nov 1 2000)

And here's a lot more where that came from:

And no one appreciated more than I did Clinton's constant lobbying (day in and day out) of Congress to cut spending programs, reduce pork spending, and decrease the size of the Federal budget.

Oh, you missed that?

Maybe you saw instead a president dragged kicking and screaming, his back bleeding from the flails of the polls, into welfare reform and other conservative spending reductions.

See above

Now he's getting credit for the sun coming up. I don't see anyone giving him credit for the economic downturn which started in the spring of 2000, largely instigated by the Clinton government's attempt to annihilate Microsoft.

That's an interesting theory although pretty bizarre. One would think antitrust suits against a major monopoly would be greeted well by neoclassical economists. Nonetheless I seriously doubt consumer confidence is down because of concerns over Microsoft.

MS aside, Clinton didn't have to work for a balanced budget. He could have gone the rout of Reagan and Bush 1 and piled on the national debt. He did what he believed was right, often in the face of his own party. He worked to set America's economic house in order because he CARED. Not just about the wealthy or the even just the poor. He cared about America and he did a fine job as president.

BTW, nice to see you back in the ring!

Nice to be back. I'm majorly backlogged at work so my visits will be sporatic for some time to come but I won't disappear completely. Someone has to keep you in check around here. :-)
