There will be euros in coins, sure, but just like any coins, they weigh a lot, fall from the pocket, are sometimes difficult to distinguish from each other and you are generally in a hurry to pay.
We have the Proton card which replaces little cash: we load it electronically with a certain amount, and every time we pay something and the vendor has a Proton card reader, it gets debited by the amount we paid.
