Fuel cells

Everyone agrees that hydrogen fuel cells--assuming you have hydrogen handy--are very efficient. Does anyone know the efficiency of fuel cells that crack hydrogen from methane or natural gas? How does this efficiency compare to simply burning the methane or natural gas in a power plant? What happens to the carbon? Anyone got a good Web reference for this?
