For what it's worth, Al-Queda clearly considers American women to be combattants

They didn't attack an all-male US military unit. They launched a terrorist attack on a domestic civilian target, knowing full well it contained a comparable number of male and female workers. One might say that the US has already sustained heavy losses among its female troops.

I have long supported allowing women to participant in any combat role for which they can physically qualify - same thing goes for men. Perhaps it would even be beneficial to allow an all-female unit of fighter pilots to bomb the Taliban, just to further humiliate these intensely misogynistic idiots. Let them see what women are really capable of.

As for the feminists in academia, they'll be fine if they remember that for all its flaws, the West with its free, democratic institutions is responsible for most of the advances in womens' rights in the 20th century. Continued advances will depend upon the complete, utter defeat - with ample military force - of backwards totalitarian forces such as Al-Queda bent on turning back the clock for women.
