The Camp David 2 week marathon peace negociations, in which Arafat and Barak were Clinton's guests (I know it seemed like they were his hostages!) was in July 2000.
After Arafat's rejection of the peace deal, relations between Israel and the Palestinians soured, violence occurred, and it really got bad after Ariel Sharon's infamous visit to the Temple Mount in September 2000.
The election of Ariel Sharon wasn't until February 2001, after 4-5 more months of violence, terrorist attacks, Israeli reprisals, hundreds of deaths, etc. which obviously drove both camps towards more extreme, rigid positions, and resulted in the election of Ariel Sharon. The stupid Palestinian terrorists and their leaders have no one but themselves to blame for getting this man elected PM of Israel.
All of which would NOT have happened if Arafat had accepted the Clinton/Barak peace proposal, and taken the tough, necessary measures to ensure security and stop terrorist acts from occurring.
