In the King County study did not make mention of cases in which burglars or intruders were wounded or frightened away by the use or display of firearms.
There is in addition the situation in which intruders keep away from a residence where it is known the occupants are armed.
A risk/benefits study would require looking at all these factors, plus the suicide incidents that were obviously irrelevant to self-defense issues.
The big point to be looked at, is as a society are we to conclude gun ownership is a Right---not to be questioned? Or is it a priviledge to be liscensed and regulated by the government?
