In 1948, European countries were disengaging one after the other from their former colonies, a process that was going on all over the world, and year after year, and always in one direction: giving back those countries their independance. Even at the cost of their living standards (they'd rather be poor than dominated by an alien culture).
Except for the small area in Palestine.
A new country was created, with the western dominated United Nation's benediction, right in the middle of another culture, another religion and ignorance of democracy.
Nobody can force the Arab nations to become democracies (I'm afraid the west is in fact preventing this as well).
But they never wanted Israel's creation in the first place, in their backyard.
That's why the UN is so concerned about what's going on there. After all, they feel responsible for the situation.
