If a person thought that Judaism, a religion, and Israel were synonomous, I can understand how that person would regard me as thinking Jews are demons. It would be a misperception, but one which could be understood.
I've explained at length how Judaism is a religion, a theological belief system embodied in the Torah and other great works.
Israel is a secular nation, with land, borders and secular government.
Not every Israeli is Jewish, there are Israeli Muslims and Christians. Sharon is a political leader of a land, not a religious leader.
And, I'm very, very critical of the way Israel conducts itself against the Palestinians. I'm critical of the country, the nation, and it's political leadership.
I'm not critical of the religion, the theology. If I were to adopt an organized religion, it would be Judaism. I belong to the local Jewish Community Center and have Jewish friends.
And if someone thought Israel and Judaism were the same, they might think I was a religious bigot.
Even though their comments about how I felt about Israelis were wrong, that's another story. One can criticize aspects of American foreign policy without disliking Americans.
