Re: National Debt Road Trip, updated

The debt picture painted by conservatives is so dire that it appears that there is no possible action or policy anyone could implement that can possibly avert disaster.
So what do they expect to do about it? They plan to cut all government expenditures that provide goods and services to the poor and middle class, and then give themselves massive tax cuts so they can prolong their lavish lifestyles for as long as possible. They are claiming seats on the lifeboats and making sure they all have lifejackets. The rest of us will have to tread water as best we can.
As the nation spirals down into chaos and paralysis, they will have their income and resources intact and protected. In this way, they can isolate themselves from whatever civil or international problems arise and they can hide behind a wall of privilege, money and property that will allow them to eat cake while the rest of the nation goes into terminal convulsions. And the misery will be good for business, people will mine their fortunes and sell their freedoms to buy the diminishing resources and work for nothing just to survive.
It is not the poor, the unemployed, the homeless, the aged, the sick, the children or the working class who created this deficit. They were never in charge, they didn’t run the country or own the means of production, or control the levers of power through investment. It was created by our leadership, of both parties, the people who own and manage and administer and legislate. It was the executive class. The bosses. And they did it with the aid and assistance of a greedy middle class that was temporarily subsidized and coddled so they would collaborate in their own betrayal.
The same educated and privileged business and government leaders who assured us they knew what they were doing, looted the economy, polluted the environment, squandered our national resources, failed to save or build infrastructure and embarked us all on an endless cycle of government, corporate and consumer debt and waste for their own short-term private profit.
We may all have blundered into this catastrophe through stupidity and sloth, but when it became clear about 30 or 40 years ago what was happening, conservatives wove a political movment from the most reactionary and detestable skeins of the political tapestry designed to protect them from the very whirlwind they had created. Its time to pay the piper, and they’re doing everything they can to walk out on the bill.
