It's a different world

Not too many years ago, it would've been just about impossible for civilians to get images of such high resolution. Today, all it takes is a credit card. Short of buying up all of the images (and there are several companies supplying them) or doing something* to the satellites, this is just something the military will have to get used to seeing.

That doesn't mean they have to like it. Had images like this existed back in 1991, we probably could not have pulled off the "Hail Mary" end run on Saddam's forces. All it would've taken was a single image showing the force buildup in an unexpected location for Saddam to know what was going to happen. Fortunately, the small number of systems that could take images sufficient to show the buildup were either under the control of the US or Russian governments or belonged to SPOT, which also had a vested interest in cutting off Saddam's info flow. I have no doubt that had such images been available, the Press would've published them in their rush to get a scoop.

That isn't the case today. Just about anyone can buy images like those released by GlobalSecurity. John Pike, who also publishes the Federation of American Scientists website, is a self-proclaimed defense expert with an agenda. What does he care if his leaks get a bunch of our guys killed? I doubt if anyone he knows or loves has ever worn a uniform.

* Unfortunately, there's damned little we can do right now to stop those satellites from imaging sensitive military installations. That may change fairly soon, though.
