Re: Chamberlain's response to Hitler was

Hi Splinx,

Before Germany invaded Poland Chamberlain was just like the German Chancellor Schröder, Jimmy Carter and Kofi Annan are now. Full of appeasement and compromise and unrealistic expectations of a tyrant. Peace is good, peace is desirable - but sometimes one is dealing with folks who do not see the workl

After Hitler invaded Poland Chamberlain woke up. I have included in parantheses how it applies today:

"We have no quarrel with the German (Iraqi) people, except that they allow themselves to be governed by a Nazi (Saddam's) Government. As long as that Government exists and pursues the methods it has so persistently followed during the last two years, there will be no peace in Europe (the middle east). We shall merely pass from one crisis to another, and see one country after another attacked by methods which have now become familiar to us in their sickening technique.

We are resolved that these methods must come to an end. If out of the struggle we again re-establish in the world the rules of good faith and the renunciation of force, why, then even the sacrifices that will be entailed upon us will find their fullest justification.

Neville Chamberlain - September 1, 1939

It is almost frighteningly appropriate still to this day.

Saddam=Hitler
The Iraqi people=The German people

Both Hitler and Saddam pursue WOMD.
Both Saddam and Hitler despise Jews.
Both Saddam and Hitler are unrepentant.
