In other words, the Republicans first proposed a stimulus package under Bush...it was his idea, remember? Until Obama embraced it. Then they were against it. And even the routine functions of government, such as appointing judges and agency chairmen have been blocked with endless filibusters and dogged obstruction, often against policies they themselves had once introduced, like personal mandate and cap-and-trade.
The Republican program is to embarass, humiliate and obstruct so that whatever negative consequences result from paralysis in government will be forever associated with the Democrat who stopped the economic meltdown they initiated. They care more about maintaining their economic hegemony than they do about their country. They have said so themselves, publicly and proudly.
Republicans don't just disagree with Obama, they drip with hatred for him. Including you. They have consistently portrayed him as alien, foreign, different,
not one of us; and of course, the usual charge of "Socialist", the catch-all insult they cavalierly apply to anyone who doesn't march in lock-step to their lies; all for a politician that is actually to the right of Bill Clinton on the political spectrum. And they have consistently punished members of their own party who have failed to show the required zeal and vitriol.
The Tea Party and their Brownshirt allies are busy burning down the Reichstag. You wanted a definition of fascism? Well I think the Republican Right is finally providing us with one.
I've often been disappointed by Obama, his policies are too moderate, too centrist, too cautious, and he has failed to recognize the duplicity and viciousness of the Republican opposition, humiliating himself by trying to meet them half-way, attempting to compromise. He's starting to fight back now, and the little piggies are squealing with outrage and indignation, aren't they?
But I also feel a personal kinship with Obama. I too was a member of a racial and immigrant minority, brought up by a single, working mother, who found success and dignity in America with help from an education I would never have received without government assistance. That is what America is really all about. That is who Americans really are. That is true American Exceptionalism. This is not a nation of smug, fat, little greasy wannabees in suits who feel they are congenitally entitled to own everything, or the trailer-trash religious fanatics and brutish ignorant Neanderthals they have enlisted as their allies.
Chicago? I thought you guys said Obama was from Kenya.
