Choices

<The prevailing opinion of professionals in the respective fields have the authority to decide what is "good" information. Curriculum is written from that prevailing opinion.

I have not been overly impressed by the opinions of "professionals" in the education field. And who watches the watchmen?

How many other choices in our lives do we rely on a "consensus of professionals" to decide for us? Not too many, I hope.

The issue is not whether there is information that is objectively true that should be taught in schools--I have no argument with that.

The real argument is the liberal conversion of that "should" to a "must," which occurs throughout every aspect of policy in this country. A universal education system will have results no different than if we specified a universal automobile that everyone had to buy.

The market does not just mean profits and other economic factors. It means free choice. And that's the whole point, really.

Free choice means gritting your teeth and realizing that not everyone is going to make the choices you would. And tempting as it might be to pull out the gun and show them the error of their ways, sometimes you just have to let it go.

The Left is convinced to the marrow of its bones that if the average American was given free reign in this, that the stupid parents would immediately send their kids to the worst possible school. Actual choices made by parents, even parents in ghettos, do not reflect this attitude, but rather a careful selection of options based on what's available.
