Proof and proofs

<"Evolution has not been proven."

Creationists as a group use scientific vocabulary in religious context. They will never understand science for as long as they do this, and they will continually discredit religion.

When religion says "proof" it refers to epistomological arguments based on faith and syllogisms. These are more mathematical: dealing with the landscape of the mind in which the infinite is an everyday thing. Capital-T Truth is the coin of the realm.

When science says "proof" it means "until the next evidence comes in". The only thing approaching an absolute is the negative proof. Everything else is theory. What goes up must come down -- so far.

In the mind of the fundamentalist, certainty equals truth, and doubt equals falsehood. They quibble over words (gravity is a Law, and therefore True, but evolution is a Theory, and therefore False) without understanding the nature of the vocabulary.

That's what this is about: lack of understanding, and the need to be certain. Nothing is relative, nothing is incomplete, everything is known and the rule book was written 6000 years ago.

It's too bad. They only make religion look stupid by forcing it into an arena in which it's ill-equipped to compete. You won't see scientists performing marriage or funeral rituals.
