Fire has been used as a symbol of terrorism since long before there the Stars & Stripes was a symbol of the United States, and fire has been used as a symbol of terrorism even long before the cross was made into a symbol of religous significance.

Symbols do mean things. Otherwise, why would someone go to the trouble to burn a cross, or burn a flag, or a church for that matter.
