The Modern American Military Services are a small core of dedicated people who had a good idea of what they were getting into. They weren't dragged into service by law, they stepped forward on thier own.
This changes the entire mindset of the common Soldier, Airman, Seaman, or Marine. It raises the Morale simply bacause of the fact these men and women agreed to be there.
Draftees, with the exception of WW II perhaps, were forced into the service. A lot of them don't want to be there. This lowers morale, and the willingness to do the hard things, the dangerous things.
Special Forces of all branches are a very choice lot. They are the people who volunteer for duty far above and beyond. If memory serves me, I think the washout rate for all the S/O units during training is about 50%, if not higher. This is a raw indication of how hard it is, these are not raw recruits. The candidates for S/O units are chosen from the best in their respective services.
When you see a remark that the S/O units are the best of the best. It isn't a cliche`, it is hard fact. The Rambo's and Immature Cowboys don't make it. You have to be smart, tough, resourceful and adaptable to make the S/O units.
Courage is not an exception, it is the norm for those who wear the colors of any of the Special Op's units.
We don't see their names very often. How and where they do their assigned missions keeps their names, ranks and services buried deep within secrecy.
Even when they don't come back.
