All Turkey is asking for is increased anti-aircraft defenses, not troops. They asked for the deployment of Patriot missile batteries, AWACS surveillance planes and chemical and biological protection units. It takes time to plan moving that kind of equipment and more time to do it. Waiting until Turkey is attacked may well be too late. A gun only smokes after it has been fired.
This short-sighted political act won't do a damned thing to stop or even slow down a war with Iraq. All it did was prove Belgium, Germany, and France can't be trusted to defend a NATO member state who asks for assistance. If you think America holds a grudge, wait until you see how Turkey handles this betrayal.
