If you have not lived in a place, you can't begin to understand it

I've visited Ohio a few times but I don't pretend to say I know all about Ohio. Reading a book or taking a tour or watching a program on PBS doesn't begin to give someone a perspective on how people actually live. Living somewhere for an extended time gives you time to actually learn about the people. I saw a lot of overt racism while living in Germany. Remember, I grew up in Alabama under the Democrats, so I know racism when I see it.

It's nice that you studied the inter-war period for a semester. As a military professional and a long-time student of 20th century military history, I've been studing the topic for over 30 years.

The Treaty of Versailles imposed some draconian reparations on Germany as if they were solely to blame for the war. Those reparations caused the collapse of the German economy, with the worst hyperinflation ever recorded. That wiped out the German middle class and led to economic and political chaos. It was from that chaos that Hitler arose. He told the public what they wanted to hear: that their problems weren't their fault (it was the Jews), that they were meant for historical greatness (once they got rid of the Jews), and that they would rule the world.
