The hard objective truth is that those "anti-war" marches actually made war more likely, not less. Had the same resolve been shown against Saddam, he might well have considered leaving peacefully. Instead, Saddam saw the marches as widespread opposition to war against him which is the same as de-facto support for him. There's almost no chance now that he will leave peacefully. War is more likely now, not less.
