First, I took some exception to the basic altruistic concept that a nation's value or moral standing can be figured from its charitable contributions...apparently only measurable as a percentage of GDP...to Third World nations.
But if I accepted that assumption, I then pointed out that the percentages given by the standard statistics did not include private charity, nor did it include the vast benefits our society and technology have given to the world.
You described the latter as being of no real importance in measuring the moral worth of a nation. To quote:
We sold the products from that technology at fair market value and got fair-and-square fat-assed rich off of it. I'm not saying w should be ashamed for that, but we got our due and were GIVEN our due. I don't see that as charity or a clear act of simple embetterment of the world.
I disagreed. It does embetter the world considerably, and by any objective standard, far more than all the charitable acts combined.
Not really crap IMO...I thought it was a reasoned response. Ayn Rand would have bitten your head off and spit in the hole.
I concede that we have also invented some nasty stuff. So have others. But it is a tiny part of our overall contributions.
