Not to put too fine a point on it...

But the system America started with had a Constitution that formed a Republic of largely independent states. It worked pretty well.

Decentralized systems often work quite well, and it's amazing how much order can be created by human cooperation without having to jam a gun up their noses.

It's also amazing how many people see the ideal form of government as an absolute dictatorship that thinks exactly like they do.

That the more usual historical result is getting stuck with one that thinks completely differently than they do never really occurs to them.

Old Russian saying: There is no better government than a good Czar, and no worse one than a bad Czar. Sadly, good Czars are not common, and it takes very little to flip a good one into a bad one.

The "philosopher king" is a common feature of utopias. In the real world, utopianism kills.
