Flame » in reply to Self-government

It's engineering.

Find out what worked. Do it again.

You want the problem defined? The reason government has seized up is that everything now is controlled at the national level. Overcentralization. We're trying to balance a pyramid on its capstone.

The Federal government is now responsible for everything down to the width of sidewalks in cities, the ponds on farms, and any conceivable activity of anyone in the country.

Remember what I said about the thousands of controls in a cockpit? Bills come before the legislature thousands of pages long, with many pages referring to other massive bills as references. Because the Federal government runs everything. No human being, or group of them, can manage this, even with the best of intentions.

If you look at totalitarian systems in history, they are almost universally moribund corrupt monsters that can barely function, except to suppress opposition.

In this country, cities used to be controlled by city governments. Counties by county governments. States by state governments. This method built this country. Mistakes were made in some places. Failures happened. Bad things, too.

But not everywhere.

"Don't make a Federal issue out of it" used to mean something.

As long as people want gods instead of leaders, this is how things will end up. Paralysis, and mistakes at the capstone level that can collapse an entire nation at once.

Decentralize.

Give up some power.

Now I'll shut up for a while and listen to other ideas.
