I took a look at a map to refresh my memory, and wasn't reassured. It's the raw strategic situation that concerns me--the potential damage that Iran might do.
The map shows the hypothetical potential for a wicked "pincers" maneuver. A few Silkworms across the water to Um Qasr, a couple of divisions sweeping down the Tigris Valley, another swinging through Basra into Kuwait....
I understand, Scott and Marcia, what you're saying by way of reassurance. But unfortunately, at least for me, it's not specific enough. That is, sure, I have faith that our military is monitoring the entire region carefully looking for just this sort of thing. But if our forces are committed to positions in the drive to Baghdad, could they easily and quickly respond to an Iranian attack? Even if we saw it coming, do we have the flexibility, now, to respond?
I hope I'm worrying unnecessarily. But I don't think that the threat is totally unreal, either. What do you military guys say?
