Translation of this word comes out as Eastern in English. There is nothing patently derogatory about Oriental in English but it certainly is not contextually the same as Eastern.
If my translation of the song is correct, he does not seem particularly happy to be known as l'oriental le brun.
I only became aware of this perception by Asians a few years ago after I adopted an Amerasian boy and began to see and learn about discrimination and stereotyping of Asians.
