Tom,
None of the administation's claims have proven true. They said that Iraq had an active nuclear weapons program. Not true. They said Iraq had links with Al Qaeda. Not true. They said Iraq had chemical and biologicial weapons. Not true. Virtually all of our so-called "intellegence" has been proven incorrect.
As for what I believe...I believe that Iraq possessed stores of chemical weapons into the late 1990's. But I also believe Iraq got rid of them after Clinton bombed Baghdad in 1998. I suspect that Saddam Hussein continued to convey the impression he still had these weapons in order to deter the Kurds and Shiites. Therein probably lies the source of his documentation problems.
My problem with the war is simple and straightforward...I supported going to war against Saddam (we should have taken him out in 1991), but I believe we should not have acted without clear and unequivocal U.N. support. And the fact the we did not make an effective case before the U.N. is significant.
My problem with the Bush administration is that they exaggerated the case for war in order to manipulate public opinion. No democracy should resort to such tactics. I am appalled that you and others here fail to recognize just how dangerous such behavior is to any democracy. I ampleased that the Cata Institute recognizes just how serious this problem is.
