Look Rich, I doubt very much that your "competition" would have the intended results. I don't believe your claims.
I don't work for Lockheed nor do I have any of their stock.
I'm interested in not wasting a perfectly good Lander body and Phoenix has a really cool set of experiments on board. It will be doing more science over a longer period than the other possible scout missions. On the science packages as MECA has been mentioned around here a bit I assume you know about it. Well it is on board! Checkout these pages:

- Lockmart - a symptom of NASA's many problems
- You can't really compare the Viking missions with current ones
- Airbags and landing sites
- With luck, you won't be dependent on NASA for your Mars data
- Scientific data from NASA is evil!
- No its not: it's simply biased

- Why won't NASA simply offer competitive prizes, rather than reward the most corrupt lobbyists?
