I don't think that the Lockmart accusation is unfounded. There's an unhealthy relationship there. NASA nearly always selects them after "competitions".
Ask yourself - what's the success track record re:Mars?
Have missions really gotten substantially more innovative since 1976? This mission will land (if it makes it) 30 friggin' years after Viking. I'd expect more.
Is Mars exploration technology gotten to where you thought it would be when you were in 1997? Remember how the common thinking was that before this proposed mission we were expecting Mars sample and return?
Something is really broken with NASA's approach to contracting and just about everything. Look at 30 years since Apollo at $15B per year. That's roughly half a trillion dollars. And we're where?

- And the Mars Scout Mission is...The Phoenix Lander!
- Has anyone got a link to a list of the instruments that will be flown? (n/t)
- NASA's Mars scout mission was COMPETED? Lockheed won again.

- You can't really compare the Viking missions with current ones
- Airbags and landing sites
- With luck, you won't be dependent on NASA for your Mars data
- Scientific data from NASA is evil!
- No its not: it's simply biased

- Why won't NASA simply offer competitive prizes, rather than reward the most corrupt lobbyists?
