My fear is that it doesn't matter anymore what is said, or how, or how much. I think alcary is right: this war was waged on non-rational reactions... In the end, this is about an Angry Ape, clubbing down the nearest being it can find as an example to all the others. We've all been there at some point in our lives, I suppose we have all felt this way (just not acted upon it), its just sad that we allowed this sensation to become part of our 'foreign policy' and sadder still that we, as a country, embarked on this path of systematic slaughter and occupation.
So my new prediction, stark and sad, is that the die-hards and the blow hards will never force a reckoning in this country- as long as there is one more loop-hole, one more fall back and one more semantic hair to split, it will keep on. In the end, it will sound about as absurd as 1980's Communist propaganda.
This administrations new task is to continue to procvide those previously mentioned loopholes and semantic hairs- and its a task they are adept at. This is why, moments before the tanks rolled, the agenda flipped to 'liberation'. This is why, after no terrorists or WMD could be found, we are talking about programs and pointing at a handful of rusty parts dug out of a rose garden, and a pair of run-down trailors about which nothing conclusive can be said.
This is why (and this is a quote of some folks here) that the fall-back position for 'Saddam supporting terrorists' is the blood-money payouts to families of suicide bombers in the westbank- a practice engaged in by several of our most trusted and favored allies in the area...
it doesn't make sense, but still it is argued with passion and brute force of belief.
Reason will not prevail here, it did not before the war, and it is not even when the sheer weight of the evidence is crushing. I don't think it matters anymore, Fox, what anyone says in this matter. And if that is the case, what will happen? What will become of us?
