"Post-war health effects could take an additional 200,000 lives." Just one of many cassandra predictions.
War was opposed by some initially because of the "certain" civilian bloodbath and now "occupation" is opposed by many of the same critics because of military casualties. This seems very inconsistent, if not opportunistic and rather perverse. I have to conclude for many critics of this military operation innocent Iraqi civilians are only useful when they are killed, rather than saved, in large numbers, for propaganda purposes or partisan politics. This is rather disheartening, especially given the "thousands" of Iraqis who now no longer routinely <a href="a href="http://web.amnesty.org/pages/irq-article_6-eng">"disappear". The military death "tally" has to be balanced against the plausible continuing civilian death toll had Saddam remained in power to continue denying his people adequate food and healthcare, while arresting, torturing and murdering many others. The American presence in Iraq is also saving American lives, focusing the attention of terrorists and extremists in the Middle East there, rather than the U.S. Of course, without a crystal ball, or maybe a portal to a parallel universe, where the U.S. stays home after 9/11 and does nothing, we will never know exactly how many Iraqis and Americans (and Israelis and Australians etc.) have been saved ultimately by this "occupation".
