While it would be obviously stupid to abandon random inspection of passengers entirely and only look at Middle Easterners, the opposite pole, where a little old lady in a wheelchair is assigned equal suspicion to a Middle Eastern immigrant, is also ludicrous.
El Al's security, predicated on the latter assumption, is ludicrously successful.
Granted, it's very inconvenient. But it's very effective, and very democratic -- the same burden shared by everyone. No one gets a "buy". Sorta like sales tax. :)
