As advocate for the devil

One might say that your publicly listed telephone is an instrument of public access to you.

A man making a speech outside your house (not on your property) or god forbid, the door to door salesperesons that were replaced by telemarketers, might annoy you but if he is breaking no disturbance or zoning laws, he is free to make his pitch. However, those who choose to have private numbers should be protected. I believe they already are until they divulge their number to a seller of info.

There are many ways to filter nuisance calls. You can request to be put on their no call list under existing laws. You can use caller ID and not answer calls from "unknown". The phone company will even filter those calls if you wish. You can hang up immediately, they don't usually call back.

Once again, I don't like them, I don't think the above argument is particularly valid and I will happily bear the economic and employment hit to be rid of them.

You can be sure, whatever happens the inventive human mind will come up with new ways to annoy us. There will be a dramatic increase in junk mail (good for the paper industry, bad for the tree huggers) and thousands of tricks to legally infer your permission to call.
