First of all, I highly resent your throwing "Democrat" around as if it were something to be loathed and despised, plugging it in where ever you feel it necessary to use a derogatory term and can think of nothing more original. This is an extremely Pompous attitude to have.
YOU need to understand that it is NOT democrats who have mistaken the motive for this war. It is the republicans who assumed, despite the fact that Mr. Bush made it clear, atleast to those who cared to hear it, that this war was NOT in revenge for 9/11 but, in defense of our country against other attacks.
9/11 made it painfully obvious to most, if not all Americans, that the US was not inpenitrable. That we are vulnerable, and at risk from such devastating events, and not a safe, cushiony place to lay your head, like so many of us had come to believe and were taking for granted. In a sense, it knocked us off our high horses.
President Bush was given information about Iraq and their weapons program that made him believe that Sadam might take advantage of our collective stunned state and finally attack. We now all know that the information he was given that made him believe that Sadam was an immediate threat was false. But at the time, His priority to this country was to protect us from any opportunistic terrorist.
For most of the people, yes, mostly democrats I know, their concern over the war was not whether it was Justified, but it's timing. We felt it was too soon after 9/11, and would give the wrong impression of the motive. Which it did. And which is Why the UN would not give their seal of approval. They misunderstood the motive for moving on Sadam. We also were afraid that going in on Sadam would turn the world's attention from bin Laden, and he would go unpunished, which, thus far, he has, and that HE would take the opportunity, while our backs were turned and focused elsewhere, to attack again. Which he will, if we do not soon return to the hunt.
You, as a Republican, must understand that this war was NOT about punishing Sadam for 9/11. It never was. Not in Bush's mind, and not in the minds of a great many democrats.
Since the start of the war, however, Mr. Bush has discovered that information he was given was false. But, it's too late to back out now. He can't just say, "OOPS, Sorry folks, made a mistake, we'll be going now." He has to follow it through, because if he doesn't, he will anger the Iraqi people, and more so because his father didn't finish the job either. The Iraqi people won't trust the US, Sadam or no Sadam, which will only serve to perpetuate the threat of terrorism.
I'm sure Mr. Bush is greatly disheartened at the attitudes about this war. I'm sure that if he could have foreseen, and frankly, he should have, what would be the popular concensus amongst the people of this country, and the sad state and gigantic Riff between Americans today, he would have tried harder to make it extremely clear what the real motive was.
Mr. Bush is an excellent president, as far as his intents goes. Clinton didn't give two craps about the people of this country. He is NOT infallible, and the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
Hopefully, now atleast YOU, get it.
