I would rather see us go to Mars rather than the Moon simply because it will be the first time a human has (to our knowledge) ever set foot on another planet.
I am not fanatical about it because I know it will happen eventually.
I just don't see the point in going back to the Moon, yeah it's closer maybe easier, but we did it the first time "not because it was easy but because it was hard."
It really isn't a challenge anymore, we KNOW we can do it.
Can we make it to Mars and back? Maybe. Probably?
Do we go where no man has gone before or do we putter around in low Earth orbit where it is relatively safe and let our spirit of adventure die a slow death?
It seems important to develop power generators that are not dependent on batteries to store power in those hostile enviroments. Perhaps a solar powered fly wheel.
