I don't know about liberals as such, but people like the ones I described in the first paragraph of this post do not have a right to call themselves patriotic, any more than a rapist can call himself a feminist.
I learned a lot about how some people think right after 9/11, when the flags started coming out, and some people began expressing actual disgust that American flags were being displayed.
