Hi Fox,
France is for the moment in depressive mood: Newspapers, TV and radio shows and very successful books all talk about the economy going bad, deficit, unemployment, etc....
And nobody's preventing those stories from going public.
There is no problem with criticizing Chirac who faces Bush but bows to Blondel.

I think it's in large part due to the loss of value towards patriotism in general, Europe has experienced since WW2 or even earlier (which made the EU possible, btw).
