You can always tell when you've got an academic backed into a corner when they start blowing verbal fog at you. It isn't only academics either, and for some people, blowing fog is a career.
If you stop and think about it, there's absolutely nothing that prevents a complex question from having a simple answer. And when you look at things from the standpoint of real life and experience, you often find that many of the people trying to push complex and usually unfathomable answers are either trying to sell you something or put something over on you.
