I understand that you want to be left alone. The fly in the ointment is that you think that non-conservatives, what you call "Leftists", are determined to deprive you of that right. Logically, therefore, the only way to achieve your desire to be left alone is to get rid of the pernicious "leftist" influence in America, or even "Leftists" themselves...even though, in so doing, you're telling someone else what to do, at a minimum, or at worst depriving them of their own rights.
But there's more to it than that. You talk about "real conservatives", but that's irrelevant--the issue is mainstream conservatives and their rhetoric these days. It can be distilled down to a simple visceral message:
"What I believe is right, decent, and patriotic. What you believe is treason."
Conservatives are throwing around the charge of treason all too easily these days. Bush himself isn't exactly subtle when he declares "you're either with us, or you're against us."
With conservatives holding all three branches of government and controlling some powerful media outlets that persuade millions of people, amid an atmosphere of carefully-cultivated fear of terrorism, they're already a significant power, and only a small step away from overwhelming power (e.g., the possible scenario of military law; or the retirement of a couple of Supreme Court justices; and so on). So it's not paranoid to wonder what people who equate disagreement with treason would do if they could hold just a little more power. Conservative pundits aren't trying to hide their glee that it seems that their time is near. What will they do when it comes?
History holds some vivid examples of how extremists come to power in a democracy, and what they do to their enemies and scapegoats once they're in power. You may not see mainstream conservatives as extremists because you're a fish swimming in that sea, but the rhetoric is chilling to those who are very clearly their enemies.
