We have actually made a lot of progress like this, particularly in recent weeks. I have read that we have killed or captured about 1,000 of the enemy so far, although I have not confirmed that as a solid number from official sources. If this were true, it is significant.
To the best of my knowledge, it's been established that most of those attacking us are Baathists trying to regain power, with relatively few pure terrorists, Islamists, and al Qaeda types, although of course there are some of all of these. I had also seen an estimate that there may be only about 5,000 of them.
Again, if all these number are true, it would mean we had depleted their current forces by about 20 percent. This is not exactly bad news.
