WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a major coup for President Bush and his beleaguered Iraq campaign, White House officials said on Sunday Saddam Hussein's capture should help lift the "blanket of fear" over the country but probably not end the guerrilla insurgency claiming U.S. lives.

Unfortunately, its clear that the "insurgency" wasn't being directed from Saddam. Someone who has to dig his own hideout hole, doesn't have much in the way of resources to direct a guerrilla movement. And I doubt he knows the whereabouts of his cronies. The liability of his capture for Mr. Bush is the opportunity Saddam will have to publically restate that Iraq no longer possessed WMDs prior to the war. An Iraqi run war crimes trial could, in fact, turn out to be very dicey for the administration. But, Saddam's capture is an essential and unavoidable milestone on the road to a democractic and stable Iraq and we should all be grateful that it has finally occurred - to date over 450 American soldiers have died so that we can now have this one man in custody.
