Start with binoculars, then buy a telescope and travel away from town (say one hour ride) where the sky is less polluted.
That's what amateur astronomers do on a regular basis.
Besides, telescopes can show amazing details of the sky, even when the light pollution is strong and sodium filters exist (filtering city lights).
There's always a solution.
But it depends on your motivation.
