the point

Gaddafi was under sanctions for 10 years and enormous pressure. Now Bush is trying to make out that what he did has somehow succeeded where the UN sanctions failed. The whole thing is absurd.

The sanctions were mainly about the Lockerbie bombing which was recently settled and the sanctions were lifted by the UN because of that. The US despite a previous agreement didn't lift their sanctions. So they must have asked Gaddafi for something additional and he gave it to them.

Now Bush is claiming the whole process was a success by him. In fact it proves more that economic sancitons and not invading was successful. He may have said that Iraq scared him and no doubt it did, but no one was preparing to invade Libya.

As to the WMD he had, how come weapons inspectors are OK to find all of these now when they were so unfairly criticised in Iraq? It sounds more to me like a vindication of Clinton's policies, and Bush is grandstanding at the end of it.

Why do they always need to lie about it? It's a good result, why not just what really happened? I doubt Blair is going to try to distort this result.
