In the speech the president said that it's easier to go from the Moon to Mars than from the Earth. I'm all in favor of going to the Moon and Mars, but it seems illogical to go to the Moon to launch to Mars. Why after going to all the trouble of getting out of the Earths gravity well, would you go down into the Moon's gravity well, smaller though it is, to turn around and launch to Mars. Why not just assemble the systems required in orbit, or at least at an L point then launch to Mars. It's a waste of energy to go back down into the Moons gravity well and come back out again. You waste fuel landing then, then you waste more fuel taking off again. What is the advantage to that? Surly cooler heads will know that. We should go to the Moon to explore the Moon and develop the space infrastructure to go to Mars.
